If you have ever worked with children in any capacity, you have likely heard of the game "floor is lava". Or perhaps you played growing up... ya know, back before there was a song and title to go with it. :) Well, I am here to change the game!
One of the most beneficial activities for littles is floor play! And here's the secret: it doesn't have to be fancy! I often times just leave the space completely empty!

As you can see in this image, I have a mirror out, and Wilma has pulled a book out of her bookshelf. The rest of the space is open for her to explore. This gives her the space to investigate movement. In the most recent weeks, she has figured out how to scoot herself backward wherever she wants to go and spin to move in different directions. She has also started to lift her hips and twisting in an effort to get to a sitting position.
It is truly incredible to watch her move! I challenge you to open up space, put the toys away, and let your little roam! Maybe turn on some music, or sing! But here is the hardest part-- don't change anything until you see your little one's focus shift! Wilma will, some days, play for an hour independently on the floor, while other days she will only be down 5 minutes before she wants a change in scenery; and that's OKAY! Take the cues from your babe and enjoy watching them learn!
Get on the floor, friends-- it is NOT lava!
